corad001K-9 UNITS:

The Vernon Township Police Department received their first K-9 Unit in 1997. Under the partnership of Sergeant Randy Detzel, the first K-9, Shafer, joined the Vernon Township Police Force along with Sgt. Detzel. Shafer was the first full-time K-9 hired within Crawford County. When Shafer retired, Sgt. Detzel worked with K-9, Greta. Greta retired, being replaced by Corado.  Corado has since passed and the current K-9 is Oscar.

Wood Carving of Crawford County's first K-9 is placed on township front lawn. K-9 Schafer is immortalized as a wood carving placed on the township's front lawn in August of 2007. The carving was commissioned by the Township through donations. The carving is the work of artist/sculptor Brian Sprague of Venango and the dedication was attended by local K-9 Units.

Can anyone remember what year this was? Dahlkemper's was not built (now Griffin Motor's) nor was the Township Building, just the garage bays for the trucks.

Thank you to Jan and Marvin Metzler for sharing this 1973 memory.
